Is Your Roof Leaking Into the Attic? 5 Signs to Watch For
When people think of a roof leak, they picture a drip falling from the ceiling. But here is something most homeowners do not know: most roof leaks never show up as a drip inside. The water sneaks into your attic instead. It can soak the wood up there for months โ or years โ before you ever notice.
This is very common on older roofs in the Hillsboro area. Our wet winters give leaks plenty of chances to start. So how do you catch one early? Watch for these five signs.
1. Dark stains on the attic wood
Grab a flashlight and look at the wood inside your attic. Do you see dark spots or streaks? That is water damage. Fresh stains are darker and may feel damp. Old ones are dried and crusty. Either way, water is getting in somewhere above.
2. A musty smell
Walk into your attic and take a sniff. A damp, musty smell means moisture is sitting up there. Wet wood and damp insulation give off that smell. If your attic smells like an old basement, water is the likely cause.
3. Black growth on the wood
Damp attic wood often grows dark, black patches. We are not allowed to call it by certain names, but you will know it when you see it โ black or dark growth spreading across the wood. It only shows up where there is moisture. Find the growth and you are close to the leak.
4. Wet or matted insulation
Your attic insulation should look fluffy and dry. If a patch looks flat, clumped, or wet, water has been dripping on it. Insulation soaks up water like a sponge, so a wet spot points you right toward the leak above it.
5. Higher heating bills
Wet insulation does not keep heat in well. If your heating bills creep up for no clear reason, a hidden leak and soggy insulation could be part of the problem.
Why this matters so much
A leak you cannot see is more dangerous than one you can. It keeps doing damage while you have no idea. Over time it rots the wood, ruins insulation, and can spread that black growth through the attic. What would have been a cheap fix turns into a big repair.
That is why we check the attic during every roof inspection. We do not just look at the shingles โ we look for where the water actually ends up.
What to do next
If you spotted any of these signs, do not wait. The sooner a leak is found and sealed, the less it costs you. Our roof leak repair service traces the leak to its real source โ not just the spot where it shows up โ and seals it tight.
